Birth, Death, Marriage Certificates
The process when a British national dies in Greece including registering the death, funerals and cremations, and bringing the person’s body to the UK.
Greek marriage, death and birth certificates requiring a paper apostille stamp must be obtained from the competent local municipality.
Digital birth certificates, marriage certificates, death certificates and certificates of family status may be ordered online (You will need your personal Taxisnet credentials). These certificates are only valid for an e-apostille and cannot be used to obtain a paper apostille or for legalization at Ministry of Foreign Affairs (certificates required for non-apostille countries and embassy attestation).
Criminal Record Certificates
Greek Criminal Record certificates for persons born abroad are issued by the Ministry of Justice (Independent Criminal Records Department).
Criminal Record Certificates for persons born in Greece are issued by Court of First Instance (Public Prosecutor's Office). Note that digital certificates are not valid for paper apostilles and cannot be legalized at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for subsequent embassy attestation - the certificate must be signed and stamped by the issuing Criminal Record Department.
